Non-Toxic Spring Cleaning Ideas

March 12th, 2025

I have many things I love about Spring. The new growth of flowers, the smell of fresh air, to packing away the wool sweaters for the season. But one of my favorite things is to Spring clean.  I get a thrill from changing out my cozy Winter decor to wiping everything down to start fresh and vibrant for Spring. I have picked up a few tips and tricks to maximize this freshness without compromising my health by using toxic chemical cleaners.

Here are 7 Non-Toxic Ideas for Your Spring Cleaning:

1 – Don’t use conventional spray cleaners full of harmful toxic chemicals. There are many DIY recipes using vinegar, citrus fruits, etc or read your labels and search for a clean plant-based brand. I like Seventh Generation or Branch Basic cleaners. You can find them available in our shop!

2 – Wash and hang dry your bedding and blankets outside in the sunshine! Even if you don’t have a clothesline, find a way to air out your sheets (or in my case, my sheepskin) for a while to blow in the breeze and soak in the sun.

3 – Make your own wood polish. It’s simply 3 parts olive oil to 1 part vinegar. You can add a few drops of lemon if you’d like. Don’t buy Pledge! I couldn’t believe the headache it gave me when I tried using store-bought wood polish after making my own for a while. The chemicals and the headache are not worth it.

4 – Clean and open your windows. Allow the fresh air to ventilate through your home. This will help rennew the air quality and help eliminate contaminants. For a non-toxic window cleaner you can use a 1:1 ratio of water and apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle.

5 – Give your toilet bowl cleaner time to work. Use a non-toxic cleaner like Borax powder or Seventh Generation toilet bowl cleaner. Place it inside the toilet bowl and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing.

6 – Invest in a steam mop! I couldn’t believe the difference it made when I switch from a Norwex wet mop to a steam mop. So much easier to use and it cleans better.

7 – Get a houseplant to purify the air. Houseplants can be easy to maintain and beneficial for cleaning the air in your home. Plus they are pretty!

Conclusion & Other Resources

Enjoying the fresh feel of Spring should never come at the cost of your health. Making some of these swaps or using some of these tips could benefit your health in multiple ways. As always I encourage you to further your research on what will work best for you and your family. Happy Spring Cleaning!
