Mouth Taping

What is Mouth Taping?
Mouth taping is exactly what it sounds like. It’s putting an adhesive tape over your mouth to force breathing through the nose while you sleep. Why would anyone choose to do this? Generations and cultures of the past knew the healing benefits of nose breathing. Mouth breathing was corrected in young children to prevent chronic mouth breathing. In our generation, many now struggle with chronic mouth breathing.
Nose Breathing is Superior to Mouth Breathing
Encouraging breath through the nose can help reduce symptoms that disrupt deep sleep or sleep in general. Nose breathing while sleeping can help reduce snoring, improve the quality of sleep, and, in mild cases, reduce sleep apnea. In general, nose breathing improves focus, helps induce relaxation, and benefits cognitive function. The practice of nose breathing is a helpful practice to be conscious of during the day as well. Breathwork has long been known to be a healing practice. Nose breathing and mouth taping are no different.
Is Mouth Taping Dangerous?
Habitually mouth taping can improve the overall quality of sleep for adults and children alike but there are times when mouth taping should be avoided. If you are sick and vomiting omit your mouthtaping practice until you are well again. This includes a cold or congestion in the nose. If nose breathing, in general, is difficult for you, you may want to practice nose breathing in the daytime before trying mouth taping at night. Consult your physician if you feel its necessary.
