Zero Waste Deep Dive-Laundry Room

February 26th, 2025
Continuing our zero waste series, we are diving into the world of washing! One of the most wasteful and energy-draining rooms in your home is the laundry room. See what items you might be able to swap out!

Laundry Room:
Dryer Sheets: Swap out those fake fragrance dryer sheets for natural wool balls. Not only are they reusable, they don’t add chemicals to your clothing!
Soap: I personally use naturally organic dried soap nuts for washing our clothing. They have a light, fresh scent, can be used for more than one load, and are compostable when you are done! They save a lot of money and help the environment. Big soap jugs begone!
Soap Sheets: An alternative to the soap nuts is laundry detergent sheets. These look like your standard dryer sheets, but get tossed into the washer, dissolving once wet. A great swap from liquid, but be careful, as a lot of these sheets still include harsh chemicals! Do your research to find the cleanest ones!
Laundry Line: A wonderful alternative to drying your clothing in a dryer is to utilize a laundry line! Channel your inner Caroline Ingalls and bring those clothes outside! Not only do you save money by doing this, but your clothes smell absolutely incredible afterwards! One of my favorite things to do is hang our blankets on the line for a while so they smell heavenly when we go to bed!
Disclaimer: Be aware of what you hang on your line and how directly they are in the sun. Over time, with high heat, some clothing will fade in color.
Bonus tip: For the dryer lint that gets removed from the tray- Compost it, set it out for birds to use in their nests, or use it as a fire starter!
